AWE Seeks Applicants for a Water Conservation and Efficiency Research Intern

Published: January 23, 2024

About Alliance for Water Efficiency

The Alliance for Water Efficiency is a non-profit organization dedicated to a sustainable water future through water conservation and efficiency. AWE is a collective of organizations and professionals committed to advancing knowledge and best practices to sustainably achieve sustained water savings.

Project Background

Drought and climate change are driving the need to advance efforts to reduce non-essential water uses, and local water providers are increasingly focusing on outdoor water use that can significantly contribute to local water demand. Utilities have been actively working to design programs that not only reduce outdoor water use but also reduce peak demands, reduce run-off and protect water quality, maintain beneficial landscapes, save customers money, and more. Further, with improved data, utilities can better identify high and excessive users and can direct programs, rebates, resources, and services to those who could generate the most cost-effective savings per household. Improvements in irrigation technology and landscape management practices can support greater water savings, too.

In 2015, AWE launched its Outdoor Water Savings Research Initiative to explore what programs, practices, and irrigation technologies can support effective outdoor water efficiency programs. This effort has led to a variety of research reports, including AWE’s 2019 Landscape Transformation Study that documented water savings between 7 and 39 percent for residential properties participating in water utility-sponsored landscape transformation programs, with savings generally increasing over time. More research, however, is needed about residential-scale outdoor water efficiency strategies and programs.

Position Description

This Intern will contribute to important research within the Outdoor Water Savings Research Initiative in collaboration with AWE’s Program Team. The Intern will conduct primary and secondary research, facilitate informational interviews, collect and organize data, and write reports for an AWE project exploring the best practices across residential landscape transformation and irrigation efficiency programs. This project will account for the significant evolution of utility programs over the past decade and what drivers have motivated these changes.

The Research Intern will have the opportunity to highlight how utilities have collaborated with their communities, universities and educators, and related water- and landscape-focused industries (like retailers, nurseries, gardens, and landscape and irrigation contractors) to save water and address water resource challenges amidst a changing climate. Their work will also investigate how utilities are advancing equitable outcomes through improved processes and programs.

Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Conduct desktop research of utility programs
  • Conduct 1:1 or focus group style interviews to learn more about how and why utilities have taken their approach and how/why their programs have evolved over time
  • Gather additional information/documentation from utilities
  • Assist with convening a roundtable or interviews/surveys with vendors, nurseries, contractors, etc. (others in related landscape and irrigation industries)
  • Data collection and analysis
  • Summarize survey and interview data and compile results into a report

Desired Qualifications and Skills

  • Current student enrolled in or recently graduated from an accredited graduate program.
  • Experience and interest in water, local government, sustainability, or other experiences related to the water efficiency and conservation field.
  • Direct experience working for or with water utilities or local governments is highly desired.
  • Experience conducting research and data analysis.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Effective communication skills including strong listening and comprehension skills, effective written and verbal communication skills, and ability to conduct oneself in a positive and professional manner.
  • Proficiency with professional tools like Microsoft Word and Excel; familiarity with GIS is a plus.
  • Active learner with a spirit of curiosity; holds themselves and their work to high standards and is committed to personal and professional growth.

We believe that candidates with a range of perspectives, experiences, and skillsets strengthen our work. If you are excited about this project but are hesitant because your qualifications do not perfectly align, please still consider applying.

Eligibility

We are interested in every qualified candidate who is eligible to work in the United States. However, we are not able to sponsor visas.

Compensation

This position is grant-funded. Applicants can expect to receive $17-20 per hour working 20-40 hours per week. Weekly schedules are flexible and will be determined in collaboration with the intern.

Location

This position is remote within the United States, with priority given to applicants from Illinois, California, Colorado, and Ohio.

Term

3-6 months, with the expected start date in May 2024; start and end dates are flexible.

A Message from the Chair of the Board of Directors

Published: January 1, 2024

Submitted by Karen Guz, Chair, Board of Directors

2024 promises to be an exciting and productive year for the Alliance for Water Efficiency (AWE) and our members. While many faced challenges in 2023 including drought, contentious water negotiations, and new regulatory environments, there were also innovations and strides forward in the ways we can work together to make every drop of water count. AWE continued to have a critical role in helping to clarify needs, bring problem-solvers together and to evaluate and identify best practices.

AWE and its members can be proud of many accomplishments in 2023. Our President and CEO, Ron Burke, has built an impressive team, and they have successfully expanded the influence and impact of our organization. We have retained key staff like Jeffrey Hughes, Director of Operations, and Rachel Austin-DeBruin, Manager of Membership and Events, and recently added Project Coordinator Amanda Christophe.

  • The entire team can take a bow for their impressive first Water Efficiency & Conservation Symposium held in Chicago in August. In Remembrance of Thomas Pape

Published: March 1, 2023

Mary Ann Dickinson, former CEO, Alliance for Water Efficiency
Pete DeMarco of IAPMO, former Board Chair, Alliance for Water Efficiency

We learned this week that our colleague and dear friend Thomas Pape passed away after a long illness. It is a tragic loss to the national water conservation community.

A graduate of Buckminster Fuller's Planning and Design program at Southern Illinois University, Tom spent his entire career promoting and supporting energy and water efficiency, where he was a well-known and passionate advocate at the federal, state, and local levels. As a water and energy efficiency technical expert, he made many important contributions to efficient resource use.

An early advocate and trainer of water and energy efficiency practices, he was instrumental in the creation and support of numerous codes and standards that greatly improved efficient water use both throughout the United States and internationally. He provided guidance to countless water utilities on practical implementation strategies in water efficiency programs. He gave his technical support and knowledge to a large number of organizations, including the California Urban Water Conservation Council, IAPMO, ASHRAE, ANSI, the US Green Building Council, and the Green Building Institute. He invented new products, like the showerhead "retrofit wrench" (which we couldn't say properly without sounding like Elmer Fudd). He spent countless months overseas working on water efficiency programs for USAID in Jordan, Cypress, and the Philippines.

He gave the greatest and most welcome support to the Alliance for Water Efficiency. From the moment the organization was founded, Tom became one of AWE's Technical Advisors and product codes experts. He served many years as the AWE representative at countless codes and standards bodies. He also provided AWE with technical program evaluations and water efficiency research and resources, especially in his specialty area of plumbing and mechanical model code development.

Tom was an extraordinary problem solver. When working on a provision in a code or standard that he knew could be made better, Tom was never satisfied with "just letting it go" when confronted with obstacles to change. Instead, he worked to better understand the issue from all perspectives. He came to meetings well-prepared with sound proposals supported by his research and that moved the needle towards greater efficiencies. The impact Tom made on improving codes and standards cannot be overstated.

Tom dedicated his life to supporting the cause of efficiency. He managed hundreds of projects and participated in simplifying dozens of codes and standards. The United States and, indeed the world owe Tom deep gratitude for his tireless efforts to ensure built-in efficiency in water and energy-using products and appliances, which will benefit us all for many decades to come.

Tom was a good friend, colleague, and one-of-a-kind, larger-than-life human being. We already sorely miss him.

AWE Hires Ron Burke as President and CEO

Published: March 4, 2021

The Alliance for Water Efficiency (AWE) is excited to announce the hiring of Ron Burke as its new President and CEO. After spending the first twenty years of his career working on environmental policy and programs for nonprofits, the U.S.  Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the Illinois EPA, Ron has devoted the last decade to leading a sustainable transportation nonprofit and, more recently, working in the private sector with Lyft Bikes and Scooters.

“I am excited to return to nonprofit, environmental work, and believe this opportunity is an especially good fit given my personal passion for AWE’s efficient and sustainable water mission,” said Burke.

After founding President and CEO Mary Ann Dickinson announced her plans to retire, the AWE Board began a comprehensive national search for a new leader, considering dozens of resumes and conducting several rounds of interviews before selecting Ron for the position.

“Ron will be a superb addition to AWE”, said AWE Board Chair Pete DeMarco. “During his career, he has helped to elevate the impact of nonprofit organizations through increased fundraising, improved internal and external collaboration, strategic communications, updating and implementing strategic plans, and a commitment to making change happen through collaboration and business savvy.  We look forward to having him apply his skills to help AWE grow.”

Ron’s career has included time as Deputy Executive Director of the American Lung Association of Metropolitan Chicago’s Programs and Policy Division, Associate Director for the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, Midwest Office Director for Union of Concerned Scientists, and Executive Director at the Active Transportation Alliance. Prior to accepting the job as AWE’s President and CEO, Ron served as the Head of Micromobility Policy, Central U.S., for Lyft Transit, Bikes, and Scooters. This included developing and implementing Public Private Partnerships, contract terms, equity programs, operations, data sharing, and legislation.

The AWE Board is confident that Ron’s unique combination of experience and passion for environmental sustainability make him a great fit to advance AWE’s mission and expand the organization’s impact. Ron will take over as President and CEO on March 22, 2021. In her retirement Mary Ann will remain a Technical Advisor to AWE.

AWE President Testifies Before U.S. Senate Committee on Energy & Natural Resources

Published: July 1, 2019

On June 25, AWE President and CEO Mary Ann Dickinson testified before the U.S. Senate Committee on Energy  & Natural Resources. The purpose of the hearing was to hear testimony on S.1971, the "Nexus of Energy and Water for Sustainability Act of 2014." AWE provided testimony along with the Department of Energy, Department of the Interior, Congressional Research Service, and The Electric Power Research Institute, Inc.

Mary Ann's testimony was based on the fact that the passage of S.1971 will be a critically important first step in promoting better joint management of water and energy at the federal level, and that S.1971 will serve as the perfect vehicle for obtaining on a national basis how much water is needed (or "embedded") in the generation of electricity and how much energy is needed (or “embedded”) in drinking water pumping and treatment as well as waste water treatment.

Mary Ann concluded by making three basic points:

  1. Water efficiency is successfully saving the nation’s water and energy resources and helping to defer expensive new capacity infrastructure.
  2. Saving water, saves energy–and the benefits are documentable.
  3. Research should be undertaken to examine the energy and water benefits from integrated approaches at the local level.
