The Utility Approaches to AMI-Based Customer Engagement: Results from a Multi-Utility Survey report shares results from AWE’s 2025 AMI Engagement Benchmarking Survey. Detailing findings from a snapshot in time, this report provides a deep dive into how utilities are using AMI to advance water efficiency and engage with customers. The report synthesizes results from 34 utilities representing five regions across the United States and presents the information on a scale of very uncommon to very common activities.
By understanding what practices are most common across the industry, water practitioners have a practical way to evaluate their own AMI programs, communicate successes, and identify opportunities to expand AMI engagement by comparing and benchmarking with peers.
The report includes information on
- Utility customer communication methods
- AMI software and hardware
- Management and operations
- Minimum continuous flow notifications
- High flow notifications
- Water savings
- Customer resources
- Leak Programs & adjustments
- Common practices, challenges, & opportunities
Building upon the survey and report, AWE has published an AMI Engagement Benchmarking Tool. The AMI Engagement Benchmarking Tool is designed to create a living database of common and uncommon AMI practices that utilities are leveraging to advance water efficiency and engage with customers.
